Home for Christmas–this home, not that one

Merry Christmas.

The greeting is not sitting well with me this year. It doesn’t seem the right thing to say.

Maybe it’s never appropriate. This is not the only Christmas when there are people who are homeless, jobless, going hungry, not knowing when they’ll be warm again.

One thing that frustrates me this holiday season is the sight of crowded airports.
What? I look at every person in an airport who doesn’t absolutely need to be on a flight to somewhere else, as the reason it’s taking so long for us all to be over Covid. Because those folks can’t give up one Christmas with Grandma or Aunt Hattie or baby Tommy, I need to stay sheltered and stressed out longer. Staying home this one holiday season doesn’t just protect them, it protects me, and gives us all a better chance to eventually return to our lives.

Do they doubt Dr. Anthony Fauci? Is it because he’s just another short Italian trying to talk sense into us (like Galileo Galilei (5’4”) or Enrico Fermi (5’3″))? Too bad there’s no one In Power who can give us a consistent message as Tony does.

Let me end on a more positive note:
What if we can learn from this year that we do have opportunities to take better care of each other, every year, every day. To bring back a

Merry Christmas

for everyone.

Times Square, 2018

Full Stop by Jo Mele

The city that never sleeps is taking a nap.

Streets are empty.

Restaurants are for take-out only.

Bars are closed.

Theaters are dark every day.

Streets have no traffic jams.

Times Square is quiet.

Shops are closed.

Churches are empty.

A New York minute now takes a full 60 seconds.
